Hands grinding pieces of amber with sandpaper during the record attempt in 2025

Gdańsk Jewellery Week 2026: We Will Break the Polish Record in Amber Grinding

Can grinding pieces of amber bring several hundred people together at one shared workbench? At this year’s Gdańsk Jewellery Week 2026, we will find out that it can.

On October 3 at 12:00 p.m. at AMBEREXPO, we will break the Polish record in amber grinding, reminding the whole world of a craft that has been part of the history of Gdańsk and Pomerania for centuries. Interest in the event has been enormous. All places for participants have already been taken, but the record attempt itself will be open for the trade fair audience to watch.

First, grinding

Grinding is one of the most important stages of working amber. It is the moment when a raw piece begins to reveal its natural beauty, clarity and unique character. Every piece is different, so the work takes experience, patience and a feel for the material. During the record attempt, participants will show the audience what this process looks like in practice. It will be not only a record-setting event but also a unique lesson in amber craft. People interested in the history and properties of this remarkable material will find more information in the About Amber section.

Why does amber have to be ground?

Natural Baltic amber occurs as irregular pieces. Only proper processing brings out its color, structure and natural shine. Some specimens delight with honey-like clarity, others have a milky, cognac or almost white shade. You can read about the remarkable richness of colors in our article The Colors of Amber: A Palette Created by Nature.

A record that promotes the craft

The aim of the event is not only to set a record. Showing the audience the amber artisan’s workshop is just as important. The record attempt is meant to remind us that behind every amber ornament there are knowledge, experience and hours of human work. The results of this work can also be seen in the Products section, which presents contemporary amber jewelry and design.

Even people who did not make it onto the participant list will be able to watch the event and see up close what hand grinding and polishing of amber looks like.

Gdańsk Jewellery Week 2026 is much more than one spectacular record attempt. The program includes exhibitions, meetings with designers, presentations of contemporary art jewelry and special events.

The official opening of the festival will be graced by the Amber Parade (“Bursztynowa Parada”), which will combine fashion, jewelry and Gdańsk traditions in a spectacular procession.

It is also worth visiting the exhibition Gdańsk Jewellery Week 2026: Spoiler Alert 2027 at the Amber Museum, presenting the most interesting works by young jewelry designers and artists. And also by experienced creators such as Marcin Tymiński.

For everyone who wants to get to know the world of amber better, it will be a unique opportunity to see both its traditional and modern faces.
