Love with an Amber Glow. Gdańsk Couples Celebrated 44 Years of Shared History

Nearly 60 Gdańsk couples celebrated “Bursztynowe Gody” (Amber Anniversary), the 44th wedding anniversary. At AMBEREXPO in Gdańsk, memories met amber, a symbol of endurance and time.

On Tuesday, October 27, the eighth edition of the Gdańsk “Bursztynowe Gody” took place at AMBEREXPO. It is a special tradition established in 2016 by the World Amber Council, dedicated to couples marking their 44th wedding anniversary. During the ceremony, the honorees received congratulations, commemorative statuettes with Baltic amber, flowers and diplomas. The hall was filled with laughter, memories and the conversations of people who have been walking through life together for 44 years.

The Class of 1982 – Martial Law and the Polish Radio Three Hit Chart

This year's honorees married in 1982. According to data from the Gdańsk Civil Registry Office, 3,622 marriages were registered that year. Most of the couples present at the gala exchanged vows in August, September and October of that year. It was also a special time for Poland and Gdańsk. Martial law was in force, and the city remained a symbol of the ideals of Solidarity and of social change. On the second anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements, August 31, 1982, some of the largest demonstrations of underground Solidarity took place in Gdańsk. In 1982 the legendary Polish Radio Three Hit Chart went on the air, and one of the biggest hits of those years was “Autobiografia” by the band Perfect. It was also a time when Lechia Gdańsk still played in the third division. A year later the club sensationally won the Polish Cup, and in the fall of 1983 it played a historic European cup match against Juventus Turin at the stadium on Traugutta Street. For many Gdańsk residents it was one of the most important sporting events of that decade. These were the circumstances in which the marriages of the couples celebrating their Amber Anniversary today began.

Two Halves of Amber

A special symbol of the ceremony was the statuettes designed by Emilia Kohut, a jewelry designer and graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. At their center are two halves of Baltic amber joined into one whole. It is a simple but deeply symbolic gesture. Every piece of amber is unique, just like every marriage. Over 44 years, shared experiences, joys, difficulties, successes and everyday moments accumulate in it, and over time they take on exceptional value.

Why Amber?

The Amber Anniversary is not a random jubilee. It was inspired by Baltic amber, which formed around 44 million years ago. It is this age that inspired the designation of the 44th wedding anniversary as the Amber Anniversary. For centuries amber has been tied to the history of Gdańsk. It is one of the city's most recognizable symbols, present in craft, art, culture and the economy. Today it also reminds us of something far more personal: the most precious things take time. That is why the Amber Anniversary remains one of the most distinctive Gdańsk traditions. It is a celebration of love that, like amber, has withstood the test of time.

BeMy Concert – The Musical Finale of the Amber Evening

The evening ended with a concert by the band BeMy, which turned out to be one of the most moving moments of the whole ceremony. The brothers Mattia and Elie Rosinski showed that music can connect generations as effectively as shared memories. The honorees and their loved ones were not just listeners. Many people sang along with the band, which prepared its characteristic Polish-French interpretations of well-known hits. Especially warmly received were “Co mi Panie dasz” by Bajm, “Lubię wracać tam, gdzie byłem” by Zbigniew Wodecki and “Kawiarenki” by Irena Jarocka. The singing together quickly turned into a spontaneous gathering of several generations united by music, memories and the atmosphere of this special evening.

A Shared Celebration of Gdańsk and Its Residents

For ten years the Amber Anniversary has been a reminder that Baltic amber is not only a symbol of history, craft or design. It can also be a symbol of lasting human relationships. The event was co-organized by Międzynarodowe Targi Gdańskie S.A. (Gdańsk International Fair Co.), operator of the “Gdańsk – Światowa Stolica Bursztynu” (Gdańsk – World Amber Capital) program. As a result, the Gdańsk tradition of the Amber Anniversary combines the promotion of the city's amber heritage with honoring residents who for 44 years have built their own stories founded on trust, perseverance and love.
